There are so many benefits to practicing yoga for classical singers. Yoga can help us stay physically healthy, nourish our creativity, and provide avenues to develop a deeper sense of purpose for the work we do in our career.
Let's be real: being a professional singer can be a bit of a roller coast ride. Through the highs of the most magical moments onstage to the lows of a disappointing audition season, we can use yoga techniques to prevent burnout and stay on track in our careers on and offstage.
As a seasoned yoga instructor (Yoga Medicine, Corepower Yoga, Lakeshore Sport & Fitness) and professional mezzo-soprano (Chicago Folks Operetta, Chicago Fringe Opera, Pittsburgh Festival Opera, Fourth Coast Ensemble), I am fascinated by the ways these two practices overlap and compliment each other. I hope this blog can provide a service to other classical singers out there who may be curious about exploring a deeper connection between yoga and singing, and to create a platform for likeminded yogi-singers to connect and ask questions.
At least once a month I'll create a post about the yoga & singing connection. To keep it useful, I'll include a section at the bottom of each post outlining real world application: a guided meditation, yoga pose, or breathing technique that relates directly to the topic at hand. Stay in touch with me through the comments section (or email me directly here) about what topics you'd like to see covered in the future.
Om shanti, Om peace, fellow music-lover!
